The city health department said a student at East High School has been diagnosed with tuberculosis.

Last week, the student went to a clinic with a cough, and on Wednesday, the Health Department confirmed it was TB. The student is a foreign national, officials said.

Investigators were scheduling TB skin tests for students and others who may have been exposed, the health department said Thursday. About 80 people will be tested.

"If we catch these people while at this stage, if they've been infected and treat them now, they won't develop the disease or pass it on to anyone else," said Jeff Hershberger with Kansas City Health Department.

The Kansas City School District sent a letter home to parents about the case.

Any confirmed or suspected TB case should be immediately reported to the Health Department at 816-513-6152. More>>

  • ( ) Two cents: Firms take financial sting out of litigation

Either kind of failure can have catastrophic results. With all the new employment legislation coming out of Congress right now, every employer needs to review its personnel policies and update the company handbook. One of the most critical areas to pay close attention to is wage and hour regulations. They are complex and easy to misunderstand, but a mistake can conceivably cost even a midsize company millions of dollars in a class-action lawsuit.

It is also essential to begin dealing with any litigation or potential litigation by insisting on an early and candid case assessment with the client, in which we listen to what he or she really hopes to achieve. Some clients feel that it is important to set a precedent that the company will not settle, to avoid copycat claims. Other clients take a bottom-line approach and are primarily concerned with minimizing legal expenses. More>>

“He chose to come off the drug in October last year so that he could spend Christmas at home with us.

“It was one of my best memories of my dad having him at home and seeing him able to eat properly for the first time in a month."
